Can I eat energy drinks with ulcerative colitis?

During a flare: Usually avoidIn remission: Caution
Energy Drinks

Energy drinks pack a high dose of caffeine, often alongside carbonation and sugar, both of which are separately linked to more urgent, looser bowel movements and bloating. An animal-model study did find that energy drink components reduced intestinal barrier permeability and colitis severity in mice, but the authors were explicit that this lab finding shouldn't be applied directly to people, since it didn't account for effects like disrupted sleep or metabolism.

During a flare

The combination of high caffeine, carbonation, and sugar makes energy drinks a commonly avoided category during a flare.

In remission

Some people in remission tolerate an occasional energy drink, but the high caffeine and sugar load means it's worth introducing cautiously and watching your response rather than relying on the animal-study findings as reassurance.

Ways to make it gentler

  • Choose a lower-caffeine version if trying one
  • Drink with food, not on an empty stomach

Safer swaps

decaf iced tea · electrolyte drinks without caffeine · water
