Can I eat apple juice with ulcerative colitis?

During a flare: Usually avoidIn remission: Caution
Apple Juice

Apples are naturally high in both excess fructose and sorbitol, a sugar alcohol, and juicing concentrates these compounds without the fiber of whole fruit. Lab testing has found reconstituted apple juice to be high-FODMAP even at small serving sizes, meaning both fructose and sorbitol can pull water into the bowel and loosen stool.

During a flare

Apple juice is a commonly reported trigger for more diarrhea and cramping during a flare because of its concentrated fructose and sorbitol.

In remission

Even in remission, apple juice tends to be less well tolerated than other juices because it's high-FODMAP at essentially any serving size, so small amounts and personal testing matter here.

Ways to make it gentler

  • Dilute heavily if trying it
  • Pair with food

Safer swaps

orange juice, diluted · cranberry juice, diluted · water
